Into Azerbaijan (August 3rd)

I have now started a new photo album for Azerbaijan - see my links on the Right hand panel

Left Tbilisi at 09:00 for the border.  Crossing the border took about an hour and a half – no problems with the people, but to get the truck into Azerbaijan they wanted a football memento of English football, however they didn’t insist on it (and we were struggling to find one) and a few dollars later and we were in Azerbaijan.   Now 4 hours ahead of the UK and the weather is oppressively hot still.

Stopped for a truck stop in the first town for money exchange and lunch.  The ATM at the first branch did not have any cash and the branch would not exchange Georgian Lara.  However other ATM’s did have cash and we found a trader to exchange the Lara.   Managed to trip over a pavement and scrap my knee – not very serious.

At the Bush camp 3 new tents were used for the first time – Sarah and Terry had bought replacement tents in Tbilisi and Eamon was camping for the first time.  Camped by one of the dried up river beds.  The truck attracted a melon seller, but then after supper 4 local lads turned up with generator and keyboard.  Their initial songs were bad and they then wanted money from those that were still up – eventually they went away.  Then the traffic started and also the dogs and the weather was very very hot in the tents – worst bush camp to date, so we are all slowly recovering this morning.
