Early morning start this morning to see the daily arms giving to the Monks as they walk through the city at 06:00. After that I walked through the early morning fruit & veg market and then back to the hostel for breakfast. The rest of the day was spent catching up on updating some of my Picasa albums plus walking around parts of the city which I had not explored yesterday and having an easy day. The 5 of the group who went to see the elephants had a very good day as their trip included a visit to a waterfall as well as riding bareback on an elephant.
Sunday 2nd October
Spent the morning and early afternoon looking around this city including the Royal Palace Museum, and several temples (Wats) (after all it is a Sunday) including Wat Pa (That Chemsi) (on the hill), Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Saen amd Wat Sop. Lots of differences from China - lots of ATM's, French influence is still obvious (e.g. bagettes are commenly on sale), lots of Western tourists, scooters with proper engines and not electric (all large vehicles are banned from the centre, hence the Truck is 5km away), English is commonly understood and public toilets are of a much better standard (at last).
The weather is hot and sticky by mid morning and the sun rises early well before 06:00 - the centre of the old town transforms itself after dark to a large tourist street market. The Mekong dominates either side of the town and although it has the colour of milk chocolate it is extremely photogenic.
A few of the group hope to go Elephant watching tomorrow.
