Route

Saturday 23rd July

4 weeks away today after leaving Barby – seems such a long time ago and a world away.

Cows, Spiders, Ants, Dogs & Mossies.  Tent was surrounded by about 10 cows this morning while I was having breakfast, quickly moved them on but after they had found an apple to eat.  2 large spiders in the tent this morning – I think I must have packed them in the rucksack somewhere, so I brushed out the tent and rehoused them.  Dogs seem to follow us everywhere – they are friendly and just need a bit of attention and some scraps – there is definitely a hierarchy among them with the lead dog always near the truck and others sneaking up when they are allowed to.  Everyone now has plenty of bites – we are all getting used to daily attacks and tent spraying before we go to bed.

First Aid.  Luckily we have an Australian nurse on board (even if she is a midwife) so Kieran’s first aid kit has been used a couple of times – latest was after Sarah fell over a tent peg and cut her foot – nothing too serious, but she is trying to rest it for the next couple of days.

Walked from the bush camp at Teatron Park into Mtskheta and saw the Samtavro Church and on the way back the local outdoor market.  We are a few km north of Tbilisi and just south of the South Ossetia.

Revised itinerary now includes the following – Kazbegi (just a few km from the Russian border in Georgia) then to  Armenia (Lake Sevan, Yerevan, Haighpat) then back to Georgia (Marneuli then Tbilisi) before moving to Azerbaijan on 4th August.

We arrived at Kazbegi late afternoon after a very windy, bumpy mountain road.  Stopped for two photo opportunities en route.

Staying at a “home stay” for 3 nights – my bedroom has 9 beds in it and the whole group has almost taken all the accommodation (about 5 or 6 bedrooms).  We are getting supper,  breakfast and lunch for 15 L per night.  However we do have clean toilet and shower facilities and real beds, so we will enjoy the change.
There is nothing to do in the village except walk up to the Church and/or do an overnight trek to a glacier.  The internet is limited, but available, bust as it will be quiet over the next couple of days I may save my blogs for Armenia or Tbilisi.
