Moving on towards Tibet (part 1)

Thursday 8th September

We now have 8 Bush camps and 9 drive days before we get to Llasa. We left Kashgor just after 09:00 and within an hour we were into semi arid desert. Not very scenic and no signs of life. We stopped for lunch at the only small desert town we went through and left the desert shortly afterwards. We then went around the large city of Aksu. We stopped at a large town of Wu Tuan to dispose of our accumulated bags of rubbish in a skip which and this immediately attracted the attention of the local scavengers who were particularly interested in the plastic bottles and anything else which could be recycled. We then went back into desert conditions.

The road which up until early evening had been very good deteriorated as the Chinese were building a new road by the side of the old one, but it was not finished yet. We mad camp in the desert about 20:00 in abandoned sandstone workings. Although it was a sheltered location it was still blustery and the ground was especially hard to put in the tent pegs. We celebrated Gary’s birthday before supper and dressed him up in the collection of birthday gifts which we have accumulated during the trip to date.
