Moving on towards Tibet (part 5)

Monday 12 September

We had a slight change of plan today as we first visited the Dunhuang caves first thing (we only camped a km or so from the caves). Half the group went around this historic site (Cost approx. £18) while the rest of us looked at the Exhibition Hall (free) and the souvenir shops. I also managed to make a small repair to my main bag as one of the seams was beginning to feel the strain.

We then went back to Dunhuang to buy some supplies before setting off again towards the desert. We passed a small Wind Farm which was not yet finished and no turbines were working yet and then later went through a small oil field where there were a number of basic “nodding donkeys”. We took a wrong turning, but when we made bush camp (at 2850 m)just before 20:00 we managed to make up the distance as the road we used was newly paved. Again as soon as the sun went down so did the temperature and we ate our supper in the dark and cold. Little did we know that the construction trucks would start moving as soon as we made bush camp and 3 temnts were moved out of the way of the dirt track. The deliveries finished luckily during supper.
