On to Lijiang (part 2)

Tuesday 20th September

After it rained during supper the night before, it was also wet for breakfast the next morning and therefore the tents were put away wet.

As we drove down the valley it widened out to a mist filled verdant valley. The Lin Zhi river valley is in one of the most beautiful regions in Tibet. We stopped at the city of Lin Zhi to register and a small amount of shopping. leaving the city we were soon surrounded by superb alpine scenery and we stopped for lunch at a small Tibetan town. The local speciality (available in all restaurants) was a kind of broth, but no one was brave enough to try it – most of us were satisfied by 2 deep fried eggs.

After lunch we climbed to over 4500m and then the roads soon worsened to a single dirt track with minor passing places. The road and bridges were very narrow with hairpin bends, steep inclines and sheer drops. 2 of the bridges had 15 T recommended limits, but we got over them just at 23 T!! There was a degree of waiting for oncoming traffic and patience was needed as this was a very slow journey. We only just got through and this section was completed by going over an Army controlled bridge where we only had half an inch to spare!! After the Army bridge (no photos allowed) the road improved although we still had to negotiate a few fords and road works caused by landslides as well as road rebuilding.
