Phnom Penh 21 Oct

This morning Sarah, Norman, Lyn and myself shared a tuk tuk to the S-21 Genocide Muaeum and then on to the Choeunger Killing Fields Genocide Centre.

The Museum included harrowing examples of what happened in this former school during the 4 years of the Pol Pot regime (1975 to 1978).  Because it is such recent history the exhibits really bring home the horror of that regime.  The building are now quite and peaceful hiding their notorious past.

A few kilometres out of the city is the Choeungek Killing Fields Genocide Centre.  The entrance also includes an audio tour which describes the site, how it was used to kill thousands of Pol Pot's opponents as well as explaining the aims of the regime.

It also includes a powerful Stupa containing 17 levels of human skulls found on the site.  A very moving experience for all of us.

On the way back we stopped to fill up the tuk tuk with petrol and the driver bought one dollar's worth!

Later in the day I walked south from the hotel to see the Independence Monument and Wat Lanka.
